A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive and behavioral functions, which utilizes standardized tests and procedures. Typically, the functions that are assessed include:

- Sensory Motor skills - Language
- Attention and Concentration - Spatial Abilities
- Learning and Memory - General Intelligence
- Problems Solving and Conceptualization - Academic skills
- Psychological State and Personality

A neuropsychological evaluation is generally recommended when there is suspected brain-based impairment in cognition, behavior or emotion. Those suffering from any of the following conditions are appropriate for referral:

- Concussion or traumatic brain injury - Developmental learning disabilities
- Stroke - Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
- Tumor - Neuropsychiatric disorders
- Seizure disorders - Lyme Disease
- Dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease) - Effects of toxic chemicals or chronic substance abuse

A neuropsychological evaluation is particularly useful for rehabilitation planning and to track recovery from neurological injury or illness.

Neuropsychological evaluations are also useful for educational planning, accommodations for standardized testing and academic programming.

Neuropsychological evaluations are also utilized in disability determination and/or forensic evaluations, when cognitive disorders are reported.
