Sex Therapy refers to the treatment
of sexual dysfunctions and other sexuality-related disorders.
The field of sex therapy has changed dramatically in recent years,
and our knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders
has been greatly expanded.
While sex therapy can encompass treatment for a wide range of
sexual problems, common problems include: erectile dysfunction,
rapid ejaculation, inhibited ejaculation, female arousal disorder,
female orgasmic disorder, vaginismus, dyspareunia (painful intercourse),
and disorders of sexual desire (either too high or too low).
For many, their sexual concerns may not be the result of a disturbance
of sexual response, but rather an anxiety regarding their sexual
behavior, or the sexual behavior of their spouse/partner. Concerns
regarding fetishes, sexual interests, and/or sexual addictions/compulsions
can often be addressed and resolved within the therapeutic setting.
Sexual difficulties can be treated in either an individual or
a couple's format. This is often determined by the specifics of
the disorder, or the preferences of the patient. In addition,
consultation and collaboration with your physician may be appropriate
in many instances. |
